The 2018 Scholarship

For 5 years, every time we've raised the bar for our scholarship, students have surpassed it! So, this year we're upping the challenge once again. To demonstrate our continued belief in students' phenomenal ability to use their learning to better the world around them, we created the:

HonorsGradU Design a Better Future $10,000 Scholarship

The GIST:

Whether through essays or multimedia, students have used their voices to share visions for a better world. So, here's their chance to put them to action! We're asking high school seniors to submit a proposal for how they'll better their communities. Because this will be a much more rigorous process with multiple rounds, we're also raising the bar for tuition awards: from five $1,000 tuition awards to five $10,000 tuition awards! We will also fund the top project up to $5,000.

The PROCESS:

We will be breaking the process into 3 rounds, using the principles of design thinking:

  1. Design and submit your ROUND 1 proposal:
    • First 3 stages of design thinking Launch cycle
    • Students submit overall proposal based on the Ford Institute community building principles
    • We select applications based on their completion, seriousness, and viability, offering feedback for those approved to move on to round 2.
    • Deadline: February 11, 2018, 11:59 MST
  2. Design and submit your ROUND 2 artifact:
    • Next 3 phases of design thinking launch cycle (all but the final launch)
    • Students submit an artifact representing their progress and learning
    • We give additional feedback
    • Deadline: March 18, 2018, 11:59 MST
  3. Design and submit your ROUND 3 reflection:
    • LAUNCH phase of design thinking launch cycle.
    • Students submit a final reflection that shares how their project is doing one of the following: 1) increasing connections, 2) building capacity, or 3) taking community-led action. They also share their ideas for acquiring further funding, in addition to the $5,000 from HGU if selected as the top finalist.
    • Include a video of yourself working on your project
    • Deadline: April 15, 2018 at 11:59 MST.

We will select 5 winners to receive $10,000 tuition scholarships to their colleges, with the top one receiving $5,000 funding to launch their project into the design thinking cycle once more during the summer of 2018 to maximize impact.

Here is a link to anything else you may need to know about our scholarship, including a digital form for them to submit their projects: https://www.honorsgraduation.com/graduation-scholarship.htm

The Andrew D. and Helen G. MacKay TU Scholarship for Innovation will provide annual awards for at least 20 incoming freshmen beginning in fall 2018. Funding amounts will range from $10,000 to $25,000 a year for four years. This new scholarship is stackable with other scholarships and grants up to the cost of tuition plus room and board.

The scholarships will be available for U.S. citizens with preference being given to Oklahoma residents and students from a military background. To be considered for a scholarship, students must have the following:
  1. ACT score ranging from 28 to 32
  2. Completed TU application via Common Application or through TU's application.
  3. Completed scholarship application.
  4. Completed FAFSA paperwork
  5. Major in one of the following programs within TU’s College of Engineering and Natural Sciences:
  • biochemistry
  • biology/biological science
  • chemistry
  • chemical engineering
  • computer simulation and gaming
  • computer science
  • electrical/computer engineering
  • engineering physics
  • information technology
  • math/applied math

We hope students will take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity and apply by the March 1 deadline.

There is a lot going on for your seniors right now, but they will not want to miss the new and improved Mountaineer Mania that Eastern Oklahoma State College is hosting for our favorite high schools on Thursday, November 19th!  We are putting a true academic focus on this year's event and want you to bring your students and come be a part of this "college prep" experience.

To facilitate the day and help students determine their best academic fit, could you please look over the academic areas attached to this email and ask your students to make a choice about which academic program they would most like to visit?  Splitting the students into "Academic Divisions" will make the experience of the day more interesting to them.  Please look over both of the attached flyers.

*Also, Eastern will waive the application fee for any seniors who bring a COMPLETED admission pkt with them on this day. Students MUST have the following documents with them in order to have the $15 fee waived:
