Get Your Resumes Ready!

Similar to job resumes, high school student resumes paint an overall picture of the student! Standard college applications leave very little space for a student to highlight every accomplishment or experience, and a student resume is a great tool to bridge that gap. Students can use this opportunity to sell themselves beyond their GPA by listing their academic awards, summer jobs, school activities and volunteer work.

AcademicWorks offers a free, downloadable student resume template, or check out more resume-writing tips below!

It's more than halfway through the fall semester, and we KNOW you have students who are on the hunt for scholarships right now (or at the very least thinking about it). Here are some tips from the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA)to help those scholarship seekers find the financial help they need:

  1. Chat it Up. Talk with a high school counselor about available scholarships and upcoming opportunities.
  2. Don’t Wait. Interested in attending a college or university? Don’t wait until you’ve been accepted. Talk to their admissions and financial aid officers about scholarships and other financial help they can offer.
  3. Narrow it Down. Do you know what academic major or career you’d like to pursue? Ask the department head at your college choice(s) if they know of any scholarships for your area of interest. Or, search for professional associations that offer scholarships for your desired field.
  4. Ask for More Help. If you’ve received your financial aid package and you still owe more for your education than you or your family can afford, ask the college about an appeal process.
  5. Work it Out. Enroll in a work study or part-time job to contribute to your education and living expenses. Students who work learn time-management skills and the importance of investing in their own education, contributing to better school performance.
  6. Apply for FAFSA. Fill out the application as soon as you can after it becomes available on Oct. 1. Studies show that, on average, students who apply for financial aid during the first three months of the FAFSA submission period receive twice as much grant money.
  7. Shop Local. While those nation-wide scholarships might look bright and shiny, students generally have better odds of being awarded a local scholarship since they are competing against fewer students.
  8. Apply, Apply, Apply. Apply for as many scholarships as you can.
  9. Don’t Pay. We advise students to never pay for scholarship or financial aid information as these services are often scams.
  10. Check out these additional scholarship resources:

We've included this printable PDF of the above information to distribute to your college-bound students.

Three Application Tips for OCCF Scholarships

  1. Use an UNWEIGHTED GPA. Why? Using an unweighted GPA sets the applicant up for greater success as many of our scholarships target students with unweighted GPAs below 3.8.
  2. Use different references for each letter of recommendation. We also encourage students to ask for letters of recommendation from people who know them well. Strong, well-written letters that speak to a student’s accomplishments and character strengthen a scholarship application.
  • Submit a resume when completing the General Application. Applicants may use this FREE resume template. A resume is an applicant’s opportunity to highlight their accomplishments to the review committee. Don’t hold back! Use these tips to improve that scholarship resume even more!
