Going Merry has just launched MerryApps, which allow you to apply for up to 12 scholarships with one application (and each application only has one essay!). There are four different MerryApps:

  • Career Goals (12 scholarships)
  • Overcoming a Challenge (8 scholarships)
  • Community Service (9 scholarships)
  • Social Media (12 scholarships)

You can do just one of them or all four! And it's fine to reuse any essays you've already done on these topics, so think about what you've written so far this year. The first deadline is in 8 days, so there's not much time! You can get started at https://www.goingmerry.com/merry-apps/

It's more than halfway through the fall semester, and we KNOW you have students who are on the hunt for scholarships right now (or at the very least thinking about it). Here are some tips from the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA)to help those scholarship seekers find the financial help they need:

  1. Chat it Up. Talk with a high school counselor about available scholarships and upcoming opportunities.
  2. Don’t Wait. Interested in attending a college or university? Don’t wait until you’ve been accepted. Talk to their admissions and financial aid officers about scholarships and other financial help they can offer.
  3. Narrow it Down. Do you know what academic major or career you’d like to pursue? Ask the department head at your college choice(s) if they know of any scholarships for your area of interest. Or, search for professional associations that offer scholarships for your desired field.
  4. Ask for More Help. If you’ve received your financial aid package and you still owe more for your education than you or your family can afford, ask the college about an appeal process.
  5. Work it Out. Enroll in a work study or part-time job to contribute to your education and living expenses. Students who work learn time-management skills and the importance of investing in their own education, contributing to better school performance.
  6. Apply for FAFSA. Fill out the application as soon as you can after it becomes available on Oct. 1. Studies show that, on average, students who apply for financial aid during the first three months of the FAFSA submission period receive twice as much grant money.
  7. Shop Local. While those nation-wide scholarships might look bright and shiny, students generally have better odds of being awarded a local scholarship since they are competing against fewer students.
  8. Apply, Apply, Apply. Apply for as many scholarships as you can.
  9. Don’t Pay. We advise students to never pay for scholarship or financial aid information as these services are often scams.
  10. Check out these additional scholarship resources:

We've included this printable PDF of the above information to distribute to your college-bound students.

Three Application Tips for OCCF Scholarships

  1. Use an UNWEIGHTED GPA. Why? Using an unweighted GPA sets the applicant up for greater success as many of our scholarships target students with unweighted GPAs below 3.8.
  2. Use different references for each letter of recommendation. We also encourage students to ask for letters of recommendation from people who know them well. Strong, well-written letters that speak to a student’s accomplishments and character strengthen a scholarship application.
  • Submit a resume when completing the General Application. Applicants may use this FREE resume template. A resume is an applicant’s opportunity to highlight their accomplishments to the review committee. Don’t hold back! Use these tips to improve that scholarship resume even more!

The following are Oklahoma City University Scholarships

Business Scholarships
OKCU offers two new special scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen interested in studying business. The Meinders Business Leadership Fellows Program provides full-tuition scholarships and co-curricular activities for high-achieving, first-time freshmen. The Business Excellence Award (listed under OKCU Special Scholarships) is also a new scholarship program and is awarded at the time of admission to those who qualify. The early action application deadline for the Meinders Business Leadership Fellows Program is November 15. 2018.

Freshman Scholarships

At Oklahoma City University, the application for admission is also the application for most scholarships. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for admission and scholarships early while scholarships are most abundant. In most cases, scholarships are stackable, but may not exceed the cost of tuition. Please see each scholarship for individual consideration deadlines.
NOTE: Academic and departmental scholarships are eligible for upgrade as long as OKCU receives the updated test scores prior to July 1.
If a student receives a substantial special university scholarship (50% tuition covered or more, e.g. Pageant Scholarships) during their time at OKCU, this replaces their academic and departmental awards for the semester(s) awarded. Additional semester use of academic and departmental awards are not added to make up for semesters the awards were replaced for a substantial special university scholarship.

Freshman University Academic Merit Scholarships
Academic scholarships are based on ACT/SAT test scores and high academic ability as indicated by grade point average. To receive any Oklahoma City University merit-based scholarships, incoming fall 2019 freshman students must submit their application and all required documents* by the priority deadline of March 1, 2019. After the priority deadline, scholarship amounts are not guaranteed. Full-time enrollment of 12 or more hours per semester is required for scholarship. Awards are renewable up to seven consecutive semesters (excluding summer terms) with required minimum cumulative 3.0 unweighted GPA.

Competitive Scholarships
Oklahoma City University offers a full variety of competitive scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen. A complete list can be found online

Pre-Engineering Program and Scholarship

Oklahoma City University students wishing to become engineers can do so through our Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Engineering partnership with Washington University in St. Louis. In this unique program, students complete three years of rigorous math, science and liberal arts courses at Oklahoma City University followed by three years of study in the engineering field of their choice at Washington University, leading to three degrees: a Bachelor of Science from OKCU and both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Engineering from Washington University. Students achieve their master’s degree in the same time it would take in a traditional program. Participants in this partnership program thus gain the best of both worlds -- a small, personal, liberal arts background from OKCU and a top-ranked engineering experience from Washington University.
This is a competitive, full-tuition scholarship awarded to an outstanding freshman student who chooses to pursue the Oklahoma City University portion of this partnership program. This award covers tuition for six semesters at OKCU and cannot be combined with other university scholarships.
The priority application deadline is February 1. The scholarship selection committee will assess multiple criteria including, but not limited to, ACT/SAT scores, GPA, one letter of recommendation from a science or math teacher, community involvement, and application essay. Interviews with selected applicants will be scheduled during the month of February and notifications will be made by the end of February.

To enter the Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree Program at OKCU, students must demonstrate they will be “calculus ready” in their first semester at OKCU. Students can demonstrate calculus readiness in a number of ways, for example: having an ACT math score of 27 (or SAT math score of 640), proficiency in high school calculus, pre-calculus, or concurrent enrollment in college algebra. Scholarship recipients would be expected to meet (or exceed) this requirement.

PLC is a competitive scholarship program that awards 125 incoming freshman with a $1,500 scholarship and a leadership development program that connects students with the best leaders on campus. PLC is a dynamic group of student leaders who make the world around them better, and your students could be an integral part of this group.

The PLC program includes a summer retreat and one class during freshman year. The priority deadline for applying is Nov. 1.

For more information about PLC, go to our website. To apply, students should complete the leadership section of their OSU application and submit their response to the following questionon their status portal: When were you at your best as a leader?

Oklahoma State Scholars Society

We are excited for the second year of our Oklahoma State Scholars Society, a scholarship program for students showing the greatest potential. This four-year, cost-of-attendance scholarship is the first of its kind for Oklahoma State University.

Eligible students must have at least a 27 ACT or 1280 SAT, a 3.8 unweighted GPA and must apply for admission to OSU and to The Honors College by Nov. 1. Semi-finalists will be selected by a faculty committee and invited to interview in the spring. Up to five finalists will be selected to receive this prestigious award.

If you have any questions about OSSS, contact Jessica Medina-Benningfield at osujessica@okstate.edu.

McKnight Scholars Leadership Program

Out-of-state students with demonstrated leadership and community involvement are encouraged to apply for the McKnight Scholars Leadership Program.

The McKnight Scholarship provides a waiver for the out-of-state portion of tuition, as well as $5,000 additional scholarship support for the first two years of a student’s OSU career. Approximately 50 highly qualified students will be selected to participate in this leadership development and scholarship program.

Interested students must submit an application atMcKnightScholars.com by Nov. 1. This application requires three letters of recommendation or “nominations” in addition to the application. Nominators should also submit their letters at McKnightScholars.com by Nov. 1.

The Oklahoma Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Club joins the United States JCI organization in presenting scholarships to selected high school seniors.  In the attached items, you will find a link to the application forms and information.  Please make this information available to your students.  These scholarships will be presented in the late spring of 2019. On the website noted, the application is available both in MS Word and PDF, and can be electronically completed.  However, the entire application packet must be mailed to the address provided.

The application should be completed in its entirety and returned to me postmarked on or before January 19, 2019.  Each application will be screened based on appearance, neatness, content, scholastic abilities, extracurricular activities, financial need, and correctly following the directions.  There is an emphasis on grade pointed weighted average, so please pass that information on as possible.

The top two (2) applications from Oklahoma will be submitted for national judging.  We are very proud that we've presented thirteennational scholarships to Oklahoma students since 2001.

Are You Ready? Scholarship Season is HERE!

Last year, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation awarded nearly $2.2 million in scholarships to more than 730 students across the state. AcademicWorks, our online scholarship application site, will reopen Oct. 1, allowing students to begin applying for scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year.

After the site reopens, encourage your students to create a login and begin completing the first step of the application process - the General Application. This application funnels students into one of three applicant pools: high school, college and renewals. The sooner they complete the General Application, the sooner they can be considered for any and all Oklahoma City Community Foundation scholarships for which they are eligible.

Remind students to pay extra attention to deadlines as they vary depending on the scholarship - ESPECIALLY this year as many deadlines have changed.

Take me to OCCF Scholarships!

How to Apply for an OCCF Scholarship

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has created a five-minute video with step-by-step instructions on how students can apply for a scholarship through our program. This video is a great tool for teachers, counselors and administrators to use when working with potential scholarship applicants!

Additional Scholarship Opportunities:

In addition to our scholarship program, there are many other scholarship opportunities available for students throughout the state of Oklahoma!

Oklahoma's Promise offers qualified Oklahoma students the opportunity to earn a scholarship for college tuition at an Oklahoma career tech, two-year college or four-year university.

Who is qualified?

  • Must be an Oklahoma resident.
  • Must be enrolled in 8th-10th grade.
  • Parents' annual federal adjusted gross income must not exceed $55,000.

OCAP Awarded FAFSA Completion Challenge Grant

The Oklahoma College Assistance Program (OCAP) has been selected to receive a 2018-19 FAFSA Completion Challenge Grant of up to $40,000 from the National College Access Network (NCAN). The grant is offered to areas with current FAFSA completion rates below the national average to encourage the area to increase its FAFSA completion rates by 5 percent in 2019.

High school seniors who complete FAFSA are more likely to attend college, so encourage your students to fill out FAFSA to improve their chances to attend college!

Students, Get Your Resume Ready!

Similar to job resumes, high school student resumes paint an overall picture of the student! Standard college applications leave very little space for a student to highlight every accomplishment or experience, and a student resume is a great tool to bridge that gap. Students can use this opportunity to sell themselves beyond their GPA by listing their academic awards, summer jobs, school activities and volunteer work. AcademicWorks offers a free, downloadable student resume template, or check out more resume-writing tips below!

The 2018 Scholarship

For 5 years, every time we've raised the bar for our scholarship, students have surpassed it! So, this year we're upping the challenge once again. To demonstrate our continued belief in students' phenomenal ability to use their learning to better the world around them, we created the:

HonorsGradU Design a Better Future $10,000 Scholarship

The GIST:

Whether through essays or multimedia, students have used their voices to share visions for a better world. So, here's their chance to put them to action! We're asking high school seniors to submit a proposal for how they'll better their communities. Because this will be a much more rigorous process with multiple rounds, we're also raising the bar for tuition awards: from five $1,000 tuition awards to five $10,000 tuition awards! We will also fund the top project up to $5,000.

The PROCESS:

We will be breaking the process into 3 rounds, using the principles of design thinking:

  1. Design and submit your ROUND 1 proposal:
    • First 3 stages of design thinking Launch cycle
    • Students submit overall proposal based on the Ford Institute community building principles
    • We select applications based on their completion, seriousness, and viability, offering feedback for those approved to move on to round 2.
    • Deadline: February 11, 2018, 11:59 MST
  2. Design and submit your ROUND 2 artifact:
    • Next 3 phases of design thinking launch cycle (all but the final launch)
    • Students submit an artifact representing their progress and learning
    • We give additional feedback
    • Deadline: March 18, 2018, 11:59 MST
  3. Design and submit your ROUND 3 reflection:
    • LAUNCH phase of design thinking launch cycle.
    • Students submit a final reflection that shares how their project is doing one of the following: 1) increasing connections, 2) building capacity, or 3) taking community-led action. They also share their ideas for acquiring further funding, in addition to the $5,000 from HGU if selected as the top finalist.
    • Include a video of yourself working on your project
    • Deadline: April 15, 2018 at 11:59 MST.

We will select 5 winners to receive $10,000 tuition scholarships to their colleges, with the top one receiving $5,000 funding to launch their project into the design thinking cycle once more during the summer of 2018 to maximize impact.
